Our Holiday Wish List

Kate says: My holiday wish list is a funny mix of practical and fun. On the practical side, I’ve got a set of flannel sheets — how cute are these scottie dogs?? — and a Clarisonic Mia 2. These are both things I’ve been wanting, but really am just not going to spend money on. Perfect for Christmas!

On the more fun side, I’m still on the hunt for the perfect leather skirt (this may be my next “white jeans” unicorn!), and I love this A-line midi version that is just out of my price range. Another fun piece that’s out of my price range: the coveted Tory Burch Fitbit bracelet. I would never buy it for myself, but it certainly would be fun to get as a gift! And finally, a new pair of wool fingerless glove/mittens in a cute color.

Jeanne says: And my holiday wish list would probably be considered quirky and totally impractical! Like a lot of women my age, if I REALLY want something I buy it — I don’t wait for the holiday. So I want gifts that I cannot justify buying for myself. I desperately need a new sleeping mask and Kate Spade has such cute ones. And these completely silly felted wool wall art pieces are calling my name.

I also share Kate’s desire for the Tory Burch Fitbit bracelet but cannot bring myself to buy it. And I love these gold linen pants — probably totally impractical. But a girl’s gotta dream, right? Finally, I have one pretty mundane item on my list — an electric toothbrush!

A Night at the DC Goodwill Fashion Show

Last week, I was invited by Maddy of Style Me Thrifty to join her at the DC Goodwill Fashion Show. It’s an event put on every year at which DC Goodwill has a pop-up boutique, cocktail hour, sponsor recognition and — of course — a fashion show!

This was the first event I’ve ever attended as a member of the “media” — see how official we look?

It was a fun way to attend an event I otherwise couldn’t have afforded — and share it with you guys!

We kicked the night off with some drinks and appetizers as we mingled in the “pop-up boutique”. Attendees got to browse curated Goodwill items at the boutique, and it was a great reminder of how much cute stuff you can get at Goodwill. Maddy and I found and tried on a few pencil skirts:

Then we got down to the real meat of the event — the fashion show! Can you believe this was also my first fashion show? It was fun to see a group of local models in outfits entirely comprised of Goodwill finds. There were some really cute combos, featuring stripes and sequins (I wanted this sequin cardigan so badly!):

And some wacky ones… Anyone need idea for how to rework your wedding dress?

By the way, it is really hard to take good photos at fashion shows 🙂

The whole night was a great reminder to me personally that I should make a greater effort to shop at Goodwill — you can find really great items for ridiculously low prices. I think the key is looking for brands you recognize (Maddy and I were picking up pencil skirts from Ann Taylor, Loft, Gap, etc.) and looking for prints and patterns that look contemporary.

If you need some inspiration for shopping at Goodwill and everyday outfits you can put together, check out the DC Goodwill Fashionista on Instagram — I love seeing both what she’s wearing AND how little it cost her!

All in all, it was a fun night of shopping, fun and free drinks 🙂

Do you guys shop at Goodwill? What great pieces have you scored?

Urban Outfitters Sale for Non-Boho Stylistas

We’ve been perusing the Urban Outfitters sale which started Monday and ends at midnight on Thursday. You might not think that we are typical UO customers — seeing as we are both pretty middle of the road stylistas and don’t exactly track with the UO bohemian vibe. Well, OK, maybe Jeanne’s hi-lo tee from last week is an exception, but in general you know what we mean, right?

But guess what? There are a lot of cool non-boho items available on the Urban Outfitters website and you should check them out!

Jeanne says: I was ON this sale almost the minute it started. I look to UO for interesting tees, long cardigan sweaters, even shoes and boots sometimes; I find their items can just add a little interest to a more traditional outfit. Here are a few of the items I’ve ordered and how I plan to use them:

I envision this little dress with a short or long-sleeved tee underneath or even a button down OR worn with leggings or even skinny jeans:

I got one of the last pairs of these great loafers – $69.99 reduced from $150.  They will look so cute with boyfriend jeans:

I’m always looking for another fabulous vegan leather jacket and this could be THE one!

This may be a one season wonder, but I want some plaid in my life and I can work this with a black cami underneath. Maybe not what UO had in mind, but it’ll work for me!

Kate says: I haven’t shopped at Urban Outfitters in years — except for a few random items — but I was pleased to find some cute stuff in this sale.

I love the print on this racerback tank, and would totally stock up on this for next summer:

This cardigan jacket is a nice twist on the usual sweater jacket. This is a great steal for fall at $49:

Finally, I know it’s not exactly romper season, but this is the first romper I’ve come across that I could actually see myself wearing, so I HAD to include it:

Here are a few more items worth checking out:

A Special Thank You for Mother’s Day

mother's day 2014

Happy mother’s day, friends!

It’s Kate – I just wanted to pop in quickly to share how grateful I am to my mom, my co-blogger. She’s my best friend and my partner in (shopping crime), and she’s shaped me into the person I am today with her love, support, and sense of humor.

She also passed along her awesome sense of style, which I am constantly striving to live up to! I’m so lucky to share this blog with her — it’s given us such a fun project to work on together from opposite sides of the county, and also has let us get to know new sides of each other.

Thank you, Mom!

Thanks to Elizabeth Santana for these silly photos from my bridal shower!

Debate The Trend: Tube Skirts

tube skirts

1 / 2 / 3

Tube skirts — the bottom half version of tube tops — have been around the last few years, but seem to be more on trend this spring. Perhaps it’s because they do look particularly flirty with cropped tops — often made of the same fabric. We’ve seen them in mini, midi, and maxi length and on all body types.

We decided to write about tube skirts the other day when Kate received a black and white striped version in her Stitch Fix package. Here is what we think about this trend:

Jeanne says: I’ve been wearing versions of tube skirts for a number of years. I like the look at midi and maxi lengths; the mini length often just looks trashy. Longer tube skirts create a long, slender line that can, surprisingly, flatter many different body types. Let’s face it: they are, no matter what you do, skintight skirts.

I like to combine them with fuller tops or longer semi-fitted tops and I always make sure the tops are high quality material to balance the “trashy” potential. I vote “yes”!!!

Kate says: This is yet another one of those trends that looks cute on some people, but that I won’t wear. Why? Tube skirts are SO unflattering unless you have the slimmest of hips! On me, tube skirts draw big, giant arrows right at my widest point.

I think a tube-style skirt in a thicker material (not cotton or jersey) could work much better — but isn’t that really just a pencil skirt?? I do agree with Mom that fitted pieces like tube skirt, leggings, etc. all look best balanced out by looser and longer tops. Although you tiny girls would look adorable in a cropped top 🙂

What do you think? Will you try the tube skirt trend?

Here are some cute options if you’re ready to try this trend:

Family Wedding Today!!!

Forgive us for skipping a post today. We have a big family wedding today – Kate’s cousin and Jeanne’s niece is getting married. Kate is maid of honor. We’ll be back in touch when life returns to normal on Monday.

In the meantime, we want to congratulate the wonderful bride and groom – Elizabeth and Joel. May they be in love forever!

Together Again: What We Bought!

In advance of a big family wedding (you’ll see outfits later this month), we got together at Kate’s house for a few days. Eric (husband and son-in-law) was most gracious about our plans to shop — pretty much all weekend. Jeanne — who almost never shops in stores — was practically drooling about the chance to touch clothes before she bought them!

We started out at the new Tanger Outlet Mall with Kate’s friend Meghan and we were not at a loss for shopping targets — J.Crew Factory, Banana Republic and Gap outlets, H&M and many others. Kate came away with these darling flats from H&M and Jeanne purchased these cute items at J.Crew at 40% off:

After that exhausting foray, Kate and Eric took off for an evening wedding and Jeanne rested up with Netflix and some red wine. A good time was had by all.

The next day we hit Pentagon City Mall. Here we did the most damage at C. Wonder, which was having a great sale. Jeanne came away with a sweatshirt and a great button down shirt (40% off!) and Kate got a beautiful silk shirt in mint (now sold out).

All in all, a great shopping weekend and some amazing sales!
