Ah, my tried and true black and gray combination again!  This is another great outfit for cooler spring days – light wool vest in the morning, just the blouse in the afternoon.  I have had this Forever 21 blouse for years and it has never gone out of style and brightens up anything I pair it with – a true clothes war horse!  It is the perfect example of “low” fashion working successfully with “high” fashion.  How many of those do you have in your closet?

Spring Style Challenge: Finding Denim Culottes

denim culottes | Two Take on Style

denim culottes | Two Take on Style

1 / 2 / 3

I am pretty sure I had a pair of denim culottes or gauchos when I was in my 20s.  I wasn’t much of a hippie back then, but nothing could keep me from a culotte trend.  Here I am again lusting after denim culottes once again.  I actually think that denim culottes represent a fresher and cooler way to wear denim in warmer weather; skinny jeans and boyfriend jeans can get pretty hot even if they are cropped.  But culottes are looser and much cooler as I see it.

I’ve been scoping out denim culottes for a while now and I discern a couple of style options:

  • Light or dark denim – I think I prefer the darker denim since it is more slimming and looks more sophisticated.  Lighter denim just looks like “Coachella” style to me.
  • Wide or Narrow Leg – I vote for wide leg; otherwise the culottes just look like longer jeans that have been cut to the culotte length.  The wide leg also makes one’s waist and hips look smaller – always good in my book. And, by the way, virtually all the denim culottes I’ve seen are high-waisted!
  • Finished hem or distressed hem – Here I haven’t yet decided but I might lean towards the distressed because it’s a little more trendy and looks so chic with sandal heels!
  • Jumpsuit or Pants – I have seen some very cute denim culotte jumpsuits – sort of a grown up version of denim overalls.  Throw on a tee under the jumpsuit and one looks together but not like they are trying too hard.  However the right culotte denim jumpsuits are hard to find!
  • Long or Short – No discussion here.  Culottes that end just below the knee look dated no matter what they’re made off.

Anyway, want to join me on the denim culotte bandwagon?  Here are some of my favorites!

As I look ahead to my RE-retirement, I know that my opportunities to wear outfits like this are numbered.  This is a true office outfit – any of these pieces could be combined with other things to look less office-y – but worn together there is no place to go except work, right?

By the way, I looked long and hard for these very simple navy suede pumps.  It is instinctive to have a pair of navy pumps, but very hard to find a good-looking pair with a reasonable heel for a reasonable price.  I’m proud that my search was successful, but will I really ever wear these after retirement?  Believe me, I am still having a hard time buying clothes without assessing their “office” potential.

Finally, I love this faux wrap skirt.  It is surprisingly flattering and even a little sexy!

Have I said this before?  I truly love all the long tunics/shirts out and about this year.  They can be worn buttoned up over pants, jeans, long pencil skirts or leggings or worn open like a duster over all of the above.  They’d even look good with wide, flowy pants for day or evening. I’m not sure how long they’re going to be in style, but I’ll wear mine to death as long as they are!

Here I’m wearing mine with a wide belt to give my waist some definition and I felt quite confident in this look!  Perfect for transitioning between seasons – wear another top or shirt underneath or don’t, depending on the weather.

Spring Trends as We See Them

Kate and I both have very nuanced views of the spring fashion trends this year – me because I am about to re-retire and Kate because she is pregnant.  But we can both still spot a few of the trends for spring and summer 2016!

I’ll start:

Embroidered/boho dresses, tops, and details:  As you already know, I was trying out this trend a few weeks ago when I was searching for an age-appropriate boho dress.  Boho details are everywhere:  in fabrics that look like my college bedspreads and fanciful embroidery and beading.  The trick here, in my opinion, is to obviously find ways to incorporate the styling so it suits each of us.  I fully embrace the details:  fabulous chandelier earrings, embroidered casual dress, maybe a bit of beading.

Wide-Legged Pants:  I used to have a number of these voluminous trousers – the last few times this style was “in”!  They are gorgeous, floaty, and make our waists look smaller.  I bought one pair for this spring and it was almost a sentimental acquisition because this is not a look I’ll be wearing much after retirement!   Well maybe if I dress up in the evening… If YOU want a pair, just remember to watch your step.  I have taken a face plant several times when my heel caught in my voluminous wide-legged pants.  Oh, and consider jeans as a way to follow this trend – high waist, wide legged jean – very chic.

Hi, it’s Kate.  To tell you the truth, I am barely paying attention to fashion this spring – unless it comes in maternity sizes and is cheap! But I see a few trends I like (that are basically standbys at this point) that have made it through my pregnancy brain.

White Sneakers:  With everything!  And since I can still rely on shoes to fit, I’ve invested in a new pair for spring. Crisp white sneaks dress down a dress, and add a preppy touch to an edgy outfit. And I can’t complain about comfortable shoes being in. If you have a pregnant friend who hasn’t adopted this trend, clue them in pronto!

Striped t-shirts:  You, me, and Audrey Hepburn.  I have a black and white striped tee that I will be wearing until my due date.  Seriously, Breton striped shirts are hot this year (as every year) and you should get at least one, if you haven’t already.  Maybe they look a little (or a lot) preppy, but they also look fresh and go with almost everything – think pattern-mixing, white jeans, layered over a button up shirt.

What spring trends are YOU watching?

Although I have matchy-matchy wardrobe tendencies, I rarely wear a single color ensemble. Well, I broke that rule with this outfit! I mean, the trousers have a heathered look that appears burgundy or brown depending on the light.

I think single color ensembles only work when the same colors appear in different shadings which is why I could never wear two different navy, black or white items together – the colors are NEVER the same.  It’s like fingernails on the chalkboard for me.  Black with gray, navy with a medium blue, white with anything but another white – that works for me!  How about you?

Today I am wearing the last of my cold weather clothes – from now on spring/summer apparel only!  But I wanted to share this outfit because I love every item I am wearing, especially this Asos blue leather jacket.  This ensemble is the perfect combination of casual but work-acceptable pieces; I find it’s hard to strike that perfect balance but, when I do, I am truly a happy fashionista.

One more thing: I have a few of these turtleneck sleeveless tunics and I find I can extend their wear into spring by combining them with a simple tee or simply wearing them as is… just a thought!

Spring Style: Metallic Flats

I love me a metallic shoe and, although I do have silver heels, I am especially partial to metallic flat shoes.  I bought some wonderful silver brogues at Zara two years ago.  So great to wear with distressed jeans or plaid skinny pants. I also have a pair of gold ankle strap flat sandals that I love. The brogues have finally bitten the dust and I am on the lookout again for flat metallic shoes!  I could go for silver, gold or even pewter and of course there are a number of styles to consider.

Metallic Brogues – available in many different designs.  Here are a few.

Metallic Flats – so beautiful!

Metallic Loafers

Here are a few more affordable beauties.  Remember that metallics go with every color!

Kate picked out today’s outfit – I want to give credit where credit is due!  Sometimes I scroll through Dropbox and I’m not inspired by any of my past ensembles.  It helps to have another fashionista’s fresh perspective.  Thanks, Kate!

Here I’m wearing a good outfit for transitioning from winter to spring – floaty, bright summer culottes paired with a cool weather top – just the ticket for a day with a cool morning (just throw on a trench or a denim jacket) that segues into a balmy afternoon. Those of us in California are experts at this kind of dressing which works between seasons everywhere else!

Never let it be said that I don’t share both my failures and my successes!  I think this ensemble is borderline “meh”.  I was distracted by a chic double denim outfit worn over at Atlantic-Pacific and tried not to overthink my outfit once I made the decision to wear it.

I really hate to go out of the house lacking confidence about my clothing choices, but occasionally it happens.  Imagine my surprise when I actually got compliments on this ensemble!  The lesson here: sometimes it is good to take a “flyer” and try something new – rather than simply going back to the same old combinations.
